Blue Lotus Martini

I needed to use up some shimmering blue curaçao I had leftover from Halloween, and I wanted something a little different than the usual “blue” cocktails (like the Blue Hawaiian, a Blue Margarita, or a Blue Bayou). After a few rounds of tinkering around with the other ingredients I had on hand, I came up with the “Blue Lotus Martini.” Like the China Rose Martini, this is essentially another take on the Lychee and Sake Martini– only this drink is an intense shade of blue, with a lightly sweet lychee-citrus taste and a subtle floral note from the creme de violette. I recommend junmai ginjō-shu (純米吟醸酒) sake in this recipe, to keep the finished drink a nice clear color, and stirring the cocktail rather than shaking it to keep from getting any foam or bubbles on top of the drink.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. sake
  • ¾ oz. lychee liqueur (such as Kwai Feh or SOHO)
  • ½ oz. blue curaçao
  • ¼ oz. creme de violette

Directions:

Combine sake, lychee liqueur, and blue curaçao in a cocktail shaker with ice, and stir. Strain into a chilled martini glass; pour in the creme de violette slowly over the back of a spoon (touch the spoon to the side of the glass for more control as you pour). If desired, you can garnish this drink with an edible flower and a mint leaf or two to give it that floating lotus look.
